Unfortunately, it is estimated that one in three people will develop an allergy during their life. Diseases in which allergy plays a role include asthma, hay fever (allergic rhinitis), eczema, contact dermatitis, urticaria and food allergy.

Allergy is an immune response by the body to an apparently harmless substance, typically a food or inhaled allergen such as pollen, house dust mite, cat fur, household substances or the environment. In developed countries diet, food manufacturing and processing have changed dramatically in the last twenty years.

During this time sensitivities to intolerances to food have often been reported and are now the most common category of allergy. The main culprits are usually wheat, dairy, eggs, oranges, treenuts, shellfish, soy and chocolate. Too often the foods 'you can't do without' are the foods that you should avoid.

Whatever the trigger, immune reactions vary with a response that may be out of all proportion to the 'threat' posed, such as itching, swelling, headaches, nausea, respiratory and digestive discomfort and in extreme cases anaphylaxis.

As the body's immune system is highly active within the digestive tract it is therefore important to ensure that food, particularly protein is digested properly and that exposure to the immune system by undigested particles does not initiate an immune 'attack' and stress or irritate the system. It is also thought that other syndromes such as IBS, Chrons, arthritis and migraine may be induced or exacerbated by such reactions.

Another key factor is thought to be reduced exposure to microbes early in life due to modern hygiene, antibiotics and caesarian births causing an imbalance in good bacteria and inappropriate immune responses. Most studies have found that allergies are more prevalent in urban areas and that children raised on farms have fewer allergies.
(Thanks goes to Sue McGarrigie - Naturopath and Nutritional Therapist for this article)

National Allergy Week 11th-15th May 2009.
It is aimed at raising awareness about the many different allergies that are now becoming increasingly common, from hay fever to allergies to cat hair and providing advice and information to allergy sufferers.

The Daily Mail yesterday explored the possible link between breast-cancer and anti-perspirants in an article written by reporter Lois Rogers entitled: ‘Can anti-perspirants harm women’s breasts?’. Rogers explains ‘recent research has shown that women who suffer repeated appearance of benign breast lumps might be more likely ultimately to develop cancer than those who do not’. Rogers goes on to explain that there is growing suspicion that these lumps could be linked to heavy use of anti-perspirant products.

A recent report published in the Journal Of Applied Toxicology shows that benign breast lumps do contain high levels of aluminium, and it is this build up of aluminium in the body that is linked to the formation of cancerous tumours and even has associations with Alzheimer’s disease.

Scientist Philippa Darbre, a cancer researcher at Reading University, states she has found ‘cancerous tumours are most likely to appear in areas of the breast nearest to the underarm area where antiperspirants have been applied’.

Rogers explains ‘Darbres’ latest research project, conducted jointly with Professor Ferdinando Mannello, of Urbino University, Italy, compared levels of aluminium with the fluid from breast cysts in 48 women, with levels of the metal found in blood samples from 30 other women, and in breast milk taken from a third group of 45 women. Where the cyst was in the armpit area of the breast, the level of aluminium present was about 25 times higher than the level found in a normal blood sample.’

Start a small home based business, an internet company or network marketing business.

Network Marketing has some advantages over other business opportunities. Long-term success in life is a reflection of your education, life experience and personal character. Many network marketing companies provide personal development training in those key areas.

A true network marketing business is the exact opposite of a traditional business model. The network marketing business is designed to bring you to the top, not keep you down at the bottom. A true network marketing business does not succeed unless it brings people to the top.

Generally it costs less to start a network marketing company than to build a business on your own.

10 Effect on the gut

Aloe Vera has a wonderfully beneficial action on bowel funtion which results in smooth and efficient transit of contents, often eradicating inconvient colicky pain.

9 Assists in healthy digestion

A healthy digestive tract ensures that nutrients from the food we eat are absorbed into the blood stream. There is clear, clinical evidence that by drinking Aloe Vera Gel the bowel is able to absorb these nutrients more efficiently, especially protein. It is also suspected that many other substances are much better absorbed under its influence.

8 Effect on gut flora

Aloe Vera is a natural 'balancer' in many areas and nowhere more so than inside the gut, where it tends to regulate the various bacteria and yeasts that inhabit it. For exampl, if a person were to suffer with too much yeast in the gut, regular ingestion of the gel would tend to reduct this overgrowth. the same can be said of the more unfriendly bacteria that can accumulate with certain conditions.

7 Effect on the skin

When they are first produced deep in the epidermis, skin cells are rather large and very much alive, but by the time they reach the surface after 21-28 days (in normal skin), they are a shadow of their former selves and are transformed into just thin flakes of keratin which eventually fall off. Aloe Vera Gel provides the essential nutrition to feed the basal cells. Therefore the skin remains healthy and is able to perform its vital functions more efficiently - as well as looking much better!

6 Increase the activity of fibroblasts

Fibroblasts are specialised cells found in the skin. Their job is to produce fibre such as collagen and elastin. These fibres give the skin its structure and of course, make it look plump and elastic. The more you have the younger your skin may look.

5 Antiviral activity

Within the mucilage layer of the leaf which surrounds the inner gel there is a long chain of sugar or polysaccharide. This has the capability of being able to help us defend against attacks by various viruses, from the common cold to the more nasty viruses and could even help balance your immune system.

4 Anti-inflammatory and pain killing effect

Amoung the substances that have been identified in Aloe Vera are several that are naturally anti-inflammatory and painkilling. People who take it regularly often find that inflammatory conditions are greatly benefited.

3 A useful source of minerals

Some of the minerals found in Aloe Vera include calcium, potassium, iron, chromium, magnesium, copper and zinc. This is because the plant tends to grow in areas where soils are rich in these minerals and its roots are able to absorb and deliver them to us in a very available form.

2 A useful source of vitamins

Aloe Vera Gel contains a large range of vitamins - even trace elements of vitamin B12 which is rarely found in plants. Apart from vitamin A, it contains B-group vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin E and folic acid. Many of these vitamins cannot be stored by the body so we need to constantly top them up from the food that we eat. What better way than by drinking a daily amount of Aloe Vera Gel while at the same time building up the body's defence system against oxidative stress naturally?

1 A general tonic for good health

By drinking the Aloe Vera Gel with all its important ingredients (often deficient in food) including 19 of the 20 amino acids needed by the human body and seven of the eight essential ones that just cannot be made, the body can function at 100%. The net result to the individual is a wonderful feeling of wellbeing.

As you can see from these 10 great reasons, taken daily - either alone or mixed with fruit juice - Aloe Vera is one of the best nutritional supplements available!

Aloe Vera provides a rich cocktail of nutritional elements whose combined action and balance produce a more powerful effect together than would be expected from the individual components.

Its natural anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial action combined with its nutritional constituents promote cell growth and therefore healing.

Dr Peter Atherton believes that it works primarily in the epithelial tissue and the immune system. This is supported by a considerable amount of anecdotal evidence but is now being backed up by clinical trials.

Many thousands of people over the centuries have reported benefit for various skin complaints such as eczema, psoriasis, ulcers, burns, acne, even stings and bites. They have found relief for bowel disorders such as colitis and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Other conditions resulting from a disordered immune system such as arthritis, asthma and ME (post viral fatigue syndrome) have improved after a regular ingestion of Aloe Vera gel.

Aloe Vera therefore has a complementary role to play in the management of various conditions.

It is very important that people always seek the advice of their doctor when a diagnosis is in doubt or where a condition does not improve.
